We build trust in financial markets and contribute to sustainable development in society. With our global sustainability programme, “Our Impact Plan”, we take this responsibility into account to give a transparent view of our activities. The goal: to create long-term value for our company, our employees, clients and our most important stakeholders. Our current sustainability report, Our Impact Report 2022”, shows the concrete measures we can take to achieve this.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, Dear Colleagues,

Our company is once again facing a tough test: The current geopolitical situation shows the fragile state of peace and safety, as well as our prosperity, in Europe. The war in Ukraine and its effects are impacting Germany’s economy and the European Economic Area as a second major shock following the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising inflation, volatile supply chains and more present new challenges for our clients and ourselves.

We support our clients in dealing with these uncertainties and changes and successfully overcoming challenges. Our values form the basis for our daily actions.

This shows once again the multifaceted responsibility we have as a company. In addition to building trust in the financial markets through our services, this also includes social aspects of our actions with respect to ESG: Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance. In order to embrace this responsibility and create transparency around our activities, the international KPMG network has set up Our Impact Plan as a global sustainability programme.

Our Impact Plan shows how KPMG can make an effective contribution to sustainable development in society across all member companies. We consider the following four fields of action to be essential: Planet, People, Prosperity and Governance. With Our Impact Report from KPMG in Germany, we are showing which concrete measures we are using to fulfil our commitment in the aforementioned areas. We always pursue the goal of creating long-term added value for our company, our employees, clients and our most important stakeholders.

In the 2022 financial year, we were able to make further progress in the four areas of activity mentioned, for example, with the introduction of an internal CO2 price as part of our environmental programme or through the new ESG Experts Training, which we have developed for our employees in cooperation with EBS University. Details on all our developments can be found in the relevant chapters of our report.

The 2022 financial year was characterised by many new challenges and new tasks that we have handled very well. We can therefore look back on a very good year with strong business performance and a growth of 9.1%. We have all contributed together to this success – with great commitment, respectful collaboration, flexibility and a passion for shaping the future. I would like to thank all our employees for this.

Nevertheless, there is much more we can do on the path to a sustainable future, which we as KPMG want to make a decisive contribution to. Therefore, we will continue to work intensively on effective measures and report on them transparently.

Since 2021, Our Impact Report has been based on World Economic Forum (WEF IBC Metrics) Principles of Stakeholder Capitalism Standard and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) as part of our sustainability reporting. Detailed information on this can be found in Our Impact Report Index.

The information and data in this year’s report were collected by our specialist departments and business divisions using representative methods and carefully checked for accuracy. An external review of Our Impact Report has not been carried out.

The reporting period ran from 1 October 2021 to 30 September 2022. In order to be able to present the information on the sustainability activities of KPMG as comprehensively as possible, the activities that went beyond the 2022 financial year and occurred by the editorial deadline (31 January 2023) were also included.

The report disclosures, like the key figures relevant to employees, generally relate to the HGB consolidated financial statements of KPMG AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft, with its three fully consolidated domestic group companies, as of 30 September 2022 (KPMG). In addition, key figures that are assigned to “KPMG in Germany” are included. KPMG Law Rechtsanwaltsgesellschaft mbH (KPMG Law), which is not consolidated in the KPMG Group, is taken into account in these key figures. KPMG Law is associated with KPMG AG Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft and is therefore closely associated with the global KPMG organisation of independent member companies.

Further information on the Planet and People action areas can be found in the key figures annex to this report. Key figures for KPMG and KPMG Law are generally shown separately.
