Gavin Maile


KPMG in South Africa

Gavin joined KPMG in 1977 as a trainee Chartered Accountant. He was promoted through the audit division until joining Information Risk Management (IRM) in 1981. Thereafter Gavin was seconded to the New Jersey USA office during 1984/5 and returned to IRM in South Africa in 1986. He was admitted to the partnership in 1990 and progressed to become the National Managing Partner of IRM within South Africa, and also a member of the International IRM steering group. In September 2001 Gavin was promoted to the position of Partner in charge of the Industrial & Automotive Markets Audit Business Unit. Gavin played a key role in the discussions, which lead to the acquisition, by KPMG, of the South African operations of Arthur Andersen after the demise of their global network, which ultimately lead to them becoming part of KPMG in South Africa. Gavin has jointly led two strategic workshops for KPMG South Africa in 2003 and 2005 and assisted with the rollout of the revised strategy. In 2007 Gavin moved to a full time role of Industry leader for the Construction, Industrial and Automotive segments and is responsible for thought leadership and providing proactive assistance to all African companies within these sectors. Gavin provides an annual update from KPMG’s Global Automotive Survey together with commentary on the local impact of the global trends. He does the same for the annual KPMG Global Construction Survey. Gavin is an member of the NAACAM Executive team. Gavin has the responsibility of sharing knowledge and ensuring KPMG clients, within his sectors, across Africa, have access to KPMG professionals, wherever they may be located.
