KPMG International has announced that Masamichi Kono, former Vice Minister for International Affairs of the Financial Services Agency of Japan (JFSA), has been named Special Advisor to KPMG’s Global Financial Services Regulatory Center of Excellence, and also appointed Senior Advisor to KPMG in Japan (KPMG AZSA LLC).
In addition to many years of distinguished public service with the JFSA, Mr. Kono has served in key global roles, including the Chairman of the IOSCO (International Organization of Securities Commissions) Board, Chairman of the IFRS Foundation Monitoring Board and Co-Chairman of the Financial Stability Board (FSB) Regional Consultative Group for Asia (RCGA).

Mr. Kono began his career with the Ministry of Finance of Japan in 1978, assuming duties as Director of the Planning and Legal Affairs Division in 1999. Subsequently, he was appointed Director of the Banks Division 1 at the Supervisory Bureau, Director of the General Coordination Division at the Planning and Coordination Bureau and Deputy Director-General of the Supervisory Bureau, and named Vice Commissioner for International Affairs in 2009. Since 2011, he has served in key positions representing the JFSA related to the discussion of international financial regulation.
