Students from around the world competed for the international title by developing innovative solutions to complex real-world business challenges. The International Case Competition drew over 20,000 student applications from more than 390 universities across 22 countries. For the final, teams competed against each other over four days.

For the second year in a row, the event was held in association with Emirates, one of the most dynamic and innovative airlines in the world, with the final competition taking place at the Emirates Aviation College in Dubai.

This year, the cases in the competition focused on the luxury hotel industry – a key sector in Dubai. Each round of the competition increased in complexity – challenging the students to continuously expand their thinking and learn from the feedback they were given by a panel of KPMG Partners.

In the final round the finalist teams, Team Australia, Canada and Serbia, were tasked with developing a holistic crisis management strategy to address a hypothetical crisis scenario for a large entertainment and theme park business. After careful deliberation, Team Canada were crowned champions when they provided the client a clear set of recommendations that managed stakeholders, protected value and were in line with the organization’s core values.

“The cases we use present the students with the sorts of challenges KPMG people are managing with our clients every day. The speed with which these talented students develop their thinking has been wonderful to see” said Rachel Campbell, Global Head of People, KPMG International. “They really are future business leaders and it’s a privilege to bring so many of them here to the magnificent city of Dubai and provide this unique learning experience.”

“We are pleased to be associated with KPMG on this competition and give talented students the chance to demonstrate their skills and expertise as they compete in Emirates’ home city of Dubai. Congratulations to the winning team and best wishes to all contestants in their future careers,” said Hubert Frach, Divisional Senior Vice President, Commercial Operations West, Emirates.

“Congratulations to the team from Canada and to all the participating teams who won their national competitions to make it here” said Iain McLaughlin, Head of Global Resourcing, KPMG International. “All of the students worked exceptionally hard over the course of the competition to understand this fascinating, yet complex, industry sector and the business challenges we asked them to analyze. But there can only be one winning team and this year our congratulations go to Stephane Gosselin, Nicolas Bernal, Alexis Frey and Abigail Chau from Team Canada.”
