Canada – Update on U.S. and Canadian Immigration
This report covers in brief, the changes experienced by Canada’s and the United States’ immigration systems and a March 1 Webinar to explain those changes.
Canadian and U.S. immigration policies have experienced frequent and important changes over the past year or so. KPMG Law LLP will be holding a webinar/seminar on March 1 on some of these changes and other developments.
In Canada, the Global Skills Strategy was implemented in June 2017. The Global Talent Stream under the Global Skills Strategy has facilitated the hiring of key talent in certain occupations by Canadian employers. Based on observations and feedback over the past several months, it is possible the government could expand the program to include additional occupations.
In the United States, immigration policies have undergone a period of flux over the past 12 months. Major changes to the “H visa” program and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) are expected, and the government continues to focus on implementing measures to “secure the border.”
These and other changes pose – and will continue to pose – significant challenges, as well as opportunities, for employers and business travelers alike.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Immigration rules have a significant impact on business operations in light of cross-border competition and the so-called “global talent war.” What has been underway in the U.S. and Canada has been at times difficult to follow, like moving targets. It can be difficult for global mobility program managers, immigration professionals, employers, and cross-border employees to stay abreast of what is happening and understand the impact on them.
