Canada: Carbon levy in Alberta; effective beginning 2017

New carbon levy in Alberta

Businesses subject to Alberta’s new carbon levy need to be prepared to comply with the rules when the levy takes effect on 1 January 2017. The carbon levy applies on taxable fuels produced and sold in Alberta, with rates that vary depending on the type of fuel.

As a result of this new levy, many businesses will face additional compliance requirements, while others will see added tax costs. The government of Alberta has released regulations with additional information on the levy. Companies affected by the carbon levy need to register for the levy, obtain any needed licenses, and consider whether they qualify for available exemptions. Companies must also determine that they have the proper processes in place to meet their new tax obligations.
