Nominated in February 2018 to be the Commissioner of Internal Revenue, Rettig will complete the remainder of a five-year term that began November 13, 2017. Since that time, David J. Kautter has served as Acting Commissioner of the IRS (as well as concurrently serving as Assistant Secretary of the Treasury, Tax Policy).

Rettig was in private practice for over 35 years, most recently as a partner in a California law firm with a practice that focused on tax issues.
