Emma Wild, UK Head of Upstream Oil & Gas Advisory at KPMG responds to comments by Oil & Gas UK on staff shortages in the North Sea:

“Whilst there is no doubt that the number of jobs lost in the North Sea oil and gas industry during the recent years has been devastating, the idea that there is now a dramatic staff shortage emerging would somewhat suggest the industry’s reluctance to move towards deploying more digital technology. Rather than looking at staff shortages and a staffing gap, we should consider this in terms of a skills gap. Those that embrace technology more rapidly will address any gaps faster and more successfully.”

“The industry needs to be focussed on doing everything it can to attract top talent. Demonstrating that the Oil and Gas sector is tech savvy should help that and also improve its ability to attract diverse talent, both in terms of minority groups, as well as diversity of skills. The oil company of the future will need to include a different set of skills to that of the past.”
