Commenting on the latest ONS retail sales figures for the month of April 2018, Paul Martin, UK head of retail at KPMG, said:

“The latest ONS figures show signs of life, but while there has been a slight recovery when compared to the declines seen in March, retailers won’t be celebrating. Growth of 1.6% is positive but as the bout of recent retail casualties has outlined, it’s been a testing first quarter for retailers. The gloomy outlook continues for the UK’s department stores in particular which were the only retailers not to experience a growth in sales this month.

“There are potential reasons to be cheerful. Retailers will no doubt be hoping the Royal Wedding, some Bank Holiday shopping sprees and an upturn in the weather lead to a better month in May.”
