Commenting after the Prime Minister’s speech today James Stewart, Head of Brexit at KPMG UK said:

“Traders of goods will give Theresa May’s speech a cautious welcome.  The prize looks attractive; the customs partnership proposal aims to square the circle between those seeking trade freedom with the rest of the world, without dramatically increasing friction for those trading with the EU.  But our clients will ask ‘is it achievable?’  Questions remain, not least how the EU will respond.

“While we wait for a deal to be negotiated, applying for the ‘trusted trader status’ mentioned by the Prime Minister is a sensible strategy.  Indeed we are seeing more and more clients doing this as part of their Brexit planning.”
