Will Hawkley, Head of Leisure for KPMG in the UK, comments on the confirmation by the Chancellor in today’s Autumn Statement that additional funding will be provided in order to host global sporting events, such as the Rugby League World Cup and the Cycling Road World Championships, in the UK.
Will said: “With the difficulties facing the leisure sector currently we must look for any glimmers of hope on the horizon, and this funding for major sports events will drive inbound tourism and spend to the UK which provides positive, if not short lived, uplifts as we saw with last year’s Rugby World Cup. A fuller calendar of high profile sporting events will help leisure operators to smooth out the peaks and troughs of activity currently experienced in the sector.”
