Professional services firm KPMG has joined forces with client Arla Foods to compete in this year’s Columbia Threadneedle World Triathlon, which is taking place for the first time in Leeds on Sunday 12 June.
More than 70 people from KPMG, a lead sponsor of the global event, and clients such as Arla Foods will take on the challenge of completing the point-to-point course, which will see triathletes start with an open water swim at Roundhay Park, before cycling 20km to the heart of Leeds city centre and then embarking on a 5km run that will see competitors finish at Millennium Square. The event will also see some of the UK’s leading triathletes compete for the last time at home before they head to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Anders Haegg, chief financial officer at Arla Foods, said: “Taking part in the triathlon was partly inspired by Arla’s commitment to improve colleague’s health and wellbeing as part of the Arla Health Strategy. It aims to provide opportunities as a team or individual to get more active and healthier in the process whilst supporting a charity or purpose dear to them.
“Sport can be a fantastic team-building exercise and the opportunity to take part in an event that will see the likes of Alistair and Jonny Brownlee compete on home soil before they head off to Rio was too good an opportunity to turn down. We’ve been training numerous times a week in the run-up to the triathlon and are really looking forward to getting out there, here’s hoping we can give the professionals a run for their money on the day!
Mike Shimwell, pensions director at KPMG in Leeds, added: “This is the first time the iconic triathlon will be held in Leeds and its created a real buzz in the city, not just because of the world-class athletes that will be taking part but the fact we’ll once again be able to showcase Leeds, and the wider Yorkshire region, on a global stage.
“Following in the footsteps of the Grand Départ and the Tour de Yorkshire, the triathlon will shine a spotlight on some of our region’s finest attributes – from the vibrant and diverse business community, to the renowned countryside we have on our doorstep. It’s a pleasure to not only support such an important event but to also take part, after all, it’s not every day you can say you’ve competed on the same stage as an Olympian!
”Leeds is home to one of KPMG’s largest UK offices, employing more than 800 people in the city who work alongside hundreds of organisations across Yorkshire and beyond on audit, tax and advisory matters.
