Based in Leeds, Allen joins the firm from EY, where his role as a Director saw him lead a national team responsible for the delivery of hospital-based performance improvement and cost reduction programmes. With more than 20 years’ experience, he has also held a number of in-house roles within the NHS. This includes three years as Assistant Director of Operations at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, where Allen was responsible for a combined budget of £120m and more than 900 employees.

At KPMG, Allen will maintain his focus on the healthcare sector and work closely with clients to improve the quality, access and performance of their operations. He will lead the firm’s management consulting healthcare practice in the north of England and have strategic responsibility for expanding the firm’s footprint in this area.

Commenting on his appointment, Allen said: “The rise in patients with multiple chronic conditions and a rapid growth in the elderly population are major challenges for the NHS. To respond the service must transform the way it works by making better use of technology and helping patients manage their conditions at home.  It will also be important to work more closely with other parts of the public sector and voluntary sector.  With a focus on working differently, we are able to help clients improve efficiencies that ultimately have a positive impact on the bottom line.“

KPMG has a well-established, national team and I will be working closely with colleagues to bring the best of the firm to healthcare clients in the north. Having spent my entire career working across all aspects of the sector, including in-house for the NHS, I understand the challenges organisations face and the need to improve services for patients. It is this focus on the end-user that we must all keep in sight as we work as a collective to improve public services.”

Jason Parker, Head of Health at KPMG, added: “Michael joins KPMG at a time when the public sector, specifically healthcare organisations, face a number of sizeable challenges in relation to cost reduction and performance improvement. This is a growing market for the firm and his deep understanding of our clients’ needs ensure he is well placed to lead the expansion of our northern practice.”

In 2014, Michael was awarded the Management Consulting Association (MCA) award for the best public sector improvement programme for his work with the NHS.
