Ingrid Waterfield, Director in KPMG’s People Powered Performance team, comments on today’s ‘Productivity Plan’ announcement by the Chancellor.
“It is positive news that the productivity report highlights that change is required across education through to exam structure. However, providing a portal for career advice is a sticking plaster rather than looking at the heart of the issue and asking how education can support the economy and the key skills and capabilities needed in today’s ever-changing world. Disappointingly, there is no suggestion that business and education are going to work together to resolve the UK’s skills shortage issues, nor are there any innovative solutions that are fit for the 21st century, “world-beating” and “ambitious” economy we wish to grow.
“Additionally, while it is encouraging that a number of the measures in the report are targeted at the younger end of the labour market, the Government must have a clearer vision of how to enhance productivity across the whole workforce which already spans four, soon to be five, generations.”
