KPMG's Head of Healthcare comments on Lord Carter’s review of NHS spending and efficiency.
He says: “Lord Carter is giving the issue of efficiency in the NHS some much needed focus. The savings opportunities identified in the report are not new, and the majority should be realisable; so the key question is what will the NHS do differently in the future to achieve this.
“If we look beyond these shores, the best health organisations globally excel at standardising and procuring. However, the NHS often tends to shy away from the discipline necessary to achieve this level of efficiency. It will take a major cultural shift if the NHS is to realise the benefits that Lord Carter clearly shows are possible.”
