Commenting on the handing back of Hinchingbrooke Hospital to the NHS tomorrow, Matthew Custance, Healthcare Partner at KPMG comments:

“It is a good time to reflect on the role of the private sector with Hinchingbrooke Hospital being handed back to the NHS this week, as many had high hopes for this new approach to Public/Private collaboration.

“For those looking to get future projects off the ground, there are lessons that can be learned from Hinchingbrooke. From the initial selection of the partner, through to the authority given to the partner to make meaningful changes, careful consideration is needed.  We don’t really have any reason to think that the private sector runs hospitals better than the public, or vice versa.  What we need is the best of both worlds.  What there needs to be is a bold vision for truly different and better services; a will to deliver that change; and a meaningful collaboration between all the players in the system.”
