After a competitive public procurement process, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (UCLH) and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust (The Christie), advised by KPMG, have appointed Varian Medical Systems as preferred bidder to provide proton beam therapy medical equipment and services as part of a government investment of a £250m procurement for advanced cancer treatment in the UK.

Commenting on the successful joint appointment, Matthew Custance, Partner at KPMG comments: “It is fantastic to be part of a team helping to bring such a ground-breaking new treatment to the UK, with two world-class hospitals.”

KPMG first supported the Trusts in 2011-2013, helping develop the business case to host and provide these services; before then supporting the Trusts through a procurement process for equipment and services involving leading global medical equipment manufacturers.

Matthew adds: “The advanced proton beam therapy cancer treatment equipment will be installed in new bespoke buildings at existing NHS hospital sites in London and Manchester. This will save overseas travel time making treatment easier for patients, reduce the cost to the NHS, and bring hope to people not otherwise able to be treated.”
