David McCorquodale, UK Head of Retail at KPMG, comments on the latest retail sales figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS):
“A Black Friday bonanza helped to kick start Christmas for retailers, with many reporting record sales online. This was the biggest Black Friday has ever been in the UK, proving it is now firmly entrenched in our shopping calendar.
“However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing and some retailers’ systems struggled to cope with the sheer number of bargain hunters trying to buy goods online. The day also left further problems in its wake, with delivery companies struggling to meet this unprecedented surge in demand and deliver items in the timescale promised.
“Next week is the most important time of the year for the grocers and they are fiercely competing to secure what will be the biggest shop of the year for the average consumer.
“There is no doubt that Black Friday has pulled forward Christmas spending, but I would expect the shops to be as busy as ever on Christmas Eve as the more disorganised among us buy those last minute items. The most common last order date for guaranteed delivery by Christmas is 19th December, but one or two retailers are also boldly offering orders for home delivery in certain postcodes on Christmas Eve.”
