As Northern Chairman, Hearld will lead KPMG’s largest operation outside of London, including its Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Leeds and Newcastle offices. The region contributes annual fee income of £205m and employs over 1,700 staff and 60 partners.
Hearld, who will remain Office Senior Partner for KPMG in Leeds, joined the firm in 1992 and has been an audit partner for nearly ten years. Having built up considerable experience within the audit team, working with PLCs, private equity-backed and privately owned companies, Hearld was named head of the Leeds office in May 2012.
Chris takes over the regional chairmanship from Jonathan Hurst, who was appointed to the role in 2009. During Hurst’s five-year term, KPMG has expanded its presence in the region with revenue growth of 20 per cent (2009: £175m). Hurst has also overseen the firm’s new office developments at 1 St Peter’s Square (Manchester) and Sovereign Street (Leeds), as well as the creation of KPMG’s National Innovation and Solutions Centre in Leeds, while maintaining a very strong client focus looking after a number of the North West’s key accounts.
Hurst will remain a client-facing partner in the North, in addition to working with KPMG’s senior leadership on the firm’s response to the Audit Reform agenda.
Commenting on the announcement, Chris Hearld said: “Jonathan successfully steered KPMG’s Northern operations through the economic crisis to create a business that is in great shape and growing. They are certainly big shoes to fill.
“Our major new office developments on both sides of the Pennines embody the confidence we have in our proposition and KPMG’s unwavering commitment to the North. With the region’s economy getting back on track I look forward to leading the business forward into its next stage of growth and supporting our clients through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
