KPMG has today announced plans for a new apprenticeship scheme, with the aim of engaging school/ college leavers who wish to pursue their careers in a professional services industry without having to go to university. The scheme will primarily target 16-19 year olds working towards an NVQ Level 3 Business & Administration qualification and will help them to gain invaluable ‘on the job‘ experience whilst working alongside a team of highly skilled Business Support staff. Apprentices will be encouraged to apply for available roles at KPMG at the end of their 13 month training period.
The initiative will be launched on Monday 7th October, with a first intake of 7 apprentices in London. It is then planned to roll out the programme to other UK offices, primarily Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Reading and Bristol in 2014.
KPMG is working with the National Apprenticeship Service and the firm’s training partner, BPP Training, to launch this programme.
Whilst school leaver schemes are gaining momentum in the City, KPMG’s approach is unique amongst the Big Four in including business support staff and will enable the firm to:
KPMG’s Business Support Group is made up of over 600 secretaries as well as graphics staff across the UK. This is headed up by Tricia Madden, Head of Business Support UK, who said of the initiative “Youth unemployment is one of the key issues in society today. As such we as a team are delighted to have joined forces with the Educational Outreach team, BPP and the National Apprenticeship Service to bring this scheme to fruition. The Business Support Academy provides us with a unique opportunity to help young people fulfill their potential and succeed in a company that they would not necessarily have had the opportunity to join through conventional means.”
Simon Collins, KPMG UK chairman and senior partner, is also supportive of the scheme. Simon said “Secretarial and admin support is vital to the effective running of any organisation. This programme is a fantastic opportunity not only for the apprentices themselves, but also for KPMG as a firm to strengthen relationships with our communities. It will enable us, through the Business Support team, to further our efforts to engage with talented young people from a range of backgrounds who wish to start their careers at KPMG.”
