HM Treasury published a call for evidence on the taxation of employee expenses on 20 March 2017 (more detail can be found here).
While HM Treasury was explicit that the Government had no plans to remove
tax relief on eligible employee expenses, it remains a fact that this call for evidence has been prompted by the increase in claims over recent years. HM Treasury add that, at present, the tax relief on expenses which employers do not reimburse and employees then claim from HMRC costs the Exchequer £800 million per year, and that there has been a 25% increase in claims from 2009-10 and 2014-15.
We therefore believe that it is important, especially in light of the General Election, that advisors and employers alike take this opportunity to respond to this call for evidence so that the next Government can take decisions on a fully informed basis. But we need your help.
