Recent developments in the UK’s tax treaty network include:

  • The Double Taxation Convention with Kosovo, which entered into force on 16 December 2015;
  • The Double Taxation Convention with Sweden, which entered into force on 20 December 2015;
  • A Double Taxation Agreement with Tajikistan, which entered into force on 16 March 2015; and
  • A Protocol to the Double Taxation Convention with Germany, which entered into force on 29 December 2015.

HMRC have identified glitches with four guidance manuals recently uploaded to gov.uk – the Employment Income Manual, the Employee Tax Advantaged Share Scheme User Manual, the Pensions Tax Manual and the Scottish Taxpayer Technical Guidance. While the glitches are fixed, no further manuals will be put onto gov.uk. The issue is expected to be resolved during January. 

KPMG in the UK has launched its inaugural Variables for Sustained Growth (VSG) Index. Developed to assess countries’ long-term economic performance prospects, the index measures countries’ productivity potential to illustrate where governments should be focusing their efforts.

Fraud in the UK reached more than £732m in 2015, according to the latest Fraud Barometer by KPMG in the UK.
