Illicit tobacco in Australia

Key highlights:

  • Illicit tobacco consumption declined marginally to 14.3% of total consumption in the twelve months to June 2015. This was the first decline seen since 2012
  • The overall decline was driven by a significant decrease in contraband consumption, such as manufactured cigarettes
  • The decline in illicit tobacco consumption was partially offset by a large rise in unbranded (“Chop Chop”) tobacco.
