“The New Law era has come, ‘get infected’ in a good way, enjoy, be assertive, change approaches, and you will see how rewarding will be your business’ response”, sums up the forum discussions Sergey Popov

On 5-6 December Kiev was the venue for the 5th International Forum for the Promotion of Legal Services, where KPMG Law in Ukraine was an intellectual sponsor.

Traditionally, the first day of the Forum became a site for law firm partners to discuss various issues, such as global trends, 2017 challenges and 2018 forecasts, client attraction and retention, investment for development, and, naturally, the most anticipated discussions were devoted to innovations.
Within the Innovations session, which discussed the technological solutions legal professionals invest in, Partner at KPMG Law Ukraine Sergey Popov acted as the moderator, and Partner, Head of Innovations & Technology Konstantin Karpushin as a speaker. Among the discussion participants were Baker McKenzie Partner Igor Olekhov, TMT Practice at Norton Rose Fulbright (Australia) Senior Associate Ken Vong, Axon Partners CEO Dmytro Gadomsky, ТСМ Group Ukraine Commercial Director Dmytro Govorun, Sayenko Kharenko Partner Nazar Cherniavsky, and Henkel Ukraine Head of Legal Department & Corporate Standard Compliance Officer Olga Lukyanova.

Konstantin Karpushin commented: “Certain global systems in multinational companies are often obsolete and not adjusted to local needs and business environments. This leads to disregard of such systems and processes by company employees, their overall demotivation, and, as a result, even the most interesting initiatives become a pure formality. We are deeply confident that innovations are what can change the situation. While developing our products − S.M.A.R.T., Knowledge Cloud, HR-Predictor, Benchmarking Tool, etc. − we were thinking of what a user would feel rather than of the system functionality. Don’t be afraid to get rid of anything that is nonperforming or ineffective – create disruption and change”.

Sergey Popov summed up the key messages delivered by experts during the session: “It is not by chance that we chose the Innovations session. For us, ‘innovations’ is not just a new and popular word – it represents real products we are ready to offer to the market since they are developed entirely by our professional team. I cannot help but agree with our colleagues from other international companies who actively implement innovations in their routine business processes – changes are really a challenge for us and happen not so fast as we wish, however, our openness to changes helps overcome all bureaucratic difficulties. I would take the liberty saying: “New Law era has come, ‘get infected’ in a good way, enjoy, be assertive, change approaches, and you will see how rewarding will be your business’ and teams’ response”.

The 5th International Forum for the Promotion of Legal Services traditionally ended with a ceremony of presenting awards to winners of PLS Top Teams, All-Ukrainian Research Programme. The research focuses on achievements, cases, and innovations of law firms and their individual representatives in several areas: management, promotion, clients, HR, social responsibility, and innovations and technologies (within each above area). The evaluation covers the teamwork of law firms including their Partners, Executive Directors, HR Managers, IT specialists, PR and Marketing Managers, rather than the just work of service promotion units or specific professionals.

This year, companies were allocated to ‘leagues’, in line with international ratings. KPMG Law Ukraine was included in Golden League, and Maria Koshutska, PR Manager, was recognised as The Best Specialist in Promotion of International Law Firm in Ukraine.
