On 5 October 2012, the conference entitled "Social and Environmental Responsibility in the Mining Industry. Russian and International Experience" took place in Moscow with the support of Russia's Natural Resources and Environment Ministry. The event was jointly organised by KPMG, the World Wide Fund for Nature in Russia, the Wild Salmon Center, the Renova Group, the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) and UNDP Russia.

The event was opened by Nikolai Militenko, Deputy Director of the Department of State Policy and Regulation on Geology and Mineral Resource Management, who gave a welcome address on behalf of Sergei Donskoi, the Natural Resources and Environment Minister. He highlighted the increasing importance of the environmental aspect of the activities of all Russian companies, emphasising that the ministry was preparing a raft of federal bills aimed at regulating this area.

The conference discussed issues such as corporate social responsibility, the introduction of the green economy in Russia, increasing socio-environmental responsibility, problems affecting indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities, and so on.

KPMG was represented among the speakers by Igor Korotetskiy, Head of Corporate Governance and Sustainability at KPMG in Russia and the CIS. He presented a report on "10 key factors of sustainable development that will influence business in the next 20 years: the mining perspective." In his speech, Igor stressed that only timely and focused attention from business to key factors such as climate change, urbanisation and the scarcity of natural resources and water will enable business to avoid the risks associated with them.

The conference agenda, information on the speeches and brief details on the speakers can be found on WWF Russia's website.
