Andrei Balyakin, Manager, ITS, KPMG in St. Petersburg, has won the European winter kiteracing championship in Italy. Andrei came first in ski kiteracing discipline, ahead of last year’s champion Markus Pompl and Florian Gruber, both from Germany.
The racing was not easy due to the weather conditions, says Andrei. It was raining on the first day while on the second day a heavy snowfall started. More complications were caused by the unsettled wind and the fact that kiteracers on skis and on snowboards were to compete in one and the same race! Andrei comments on his victory: “In this mayhem the main challenge was to avoid collisions with fellow racers from Germany, France, Sweden and other European countries. To make a long story short, there was only one rule in this race: abandon all rules!”
Another good thing is that the entire Russian team performed very well despite these difficulties. All in all, the Russian team has won 5 gold medals plus a bronze medal.
