Charlotte Keen

Assistant Manager, Audit and Assurance, on secondment at KPMG in Sydney

Charlotte joined KPMG in the Channel Islands as an assistant in 2011, in 2014 she qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA). She has worked with a
range of clients, including Funds, Trusts, Banks and Retail.

‘After four years working in the Channel Islands, I was ready to take on a new challenge. The secondment programme was something that had always appealed to me, especially when applying for the graduate scheme.’

Why did you want to apply for a secondment in Australia?

Sydney was my first and only choice, I wanted to experience life in a big city, live a stone’s throw away from the beach, and be closer to my sister (who lives in Australia) – all whilst developing my technical knowledge and learning new skills.

What new experiences and exposure have you had so far?

My two main roles at KPMG in Sydney are within the Insurance and Reinsurance industries – something I’ve had no previous exposure to. The learning curve is steep! One week in and I was given the responsibility of managing a team of five on a huge reinsurance job.

Are you working with secondees?

I work alongside secondees from all over the world. Mainly from the UK, America and Canada. They’ve become a second family to me - we often plan trips together to make the most of being in Australia.

What are you enjoying from a work and personal aspect?

Meeting new people, being challenged and of course the weather – thanks to the warmer climate, there’s always something taking place before and after work.

What are the benefits of working for a KPMG member firm?

The whole process was hassle-free, with somebody to help me every step
of the way. Since arriving in Australia, I’ve received a lot of support from KPMG in Sydney in terms of finding a place to live, settling into work and making new friends. The office environment is very similar to Jersey in that everybody is friendly and welcoming. We all know how to enjoy ourselves at the end of a hard day or week.

Niall McSwiggan

Audit in Charge, on secondment at KPMG in Hong Kong

Niall joined KPMG in the Channel Islands as a trainee in the audit department in 2009. On completing his ACCA examinations, he worked as an audit in charge for two years, before relocating to Hong Kong on a two year secondment.

‘I’ve now been working in Hong Kong for over a year and although
challenging, it’s been a massively worthwhile experience.’

Why did you want to apply for a secondment in Hong Kong?

I wanted to gain expertise by relocating to a global finance centre outside of my comfort zone. Hong Kong was the perfect choice of east meets west, and a place where my (lack of) language ability wasn't too much of a hindrance.

What new experiences and exposure have you had so far?

Besides meeting new people and working with new clients, I have helped
implement various systems within the office, some used at KPMG in the Channel Islands, and others brand new to other member firms that are part of the global network.

Are you working with secondees?

The start date of my secondment coincided with other secondees from the USA and UK. I was able to meet with people from different departments on differing lengths of assignments. My department is growing, which means they’re on the lookout for more secondees from all over the world.

What are you enjoying from a work and personal aspect?

Being part of a much larger office, I am able to gain experience on
projects and meet clients I wouldn't normally see in the Channel Islands.
Bringing fresh expertise to the team allows me to bring a new perspective to
the Hong Kong office.

Personally, I enjoy discovering the food and experiences Hong Kong has
to offer. There are impressive beaches, mountains and country parks to explore (when you feel like escaping the city) and the ability to travel all over Asia in a relatively short amount of time makes it a great place to be.

What are the benefits of working for a KPMG member firm?

KPMG in the Channel Islands were very supportive of my desire to enter a secondment and helped me obtain the position with KPMG in Hong Kong,
organising all of the logistics and visas on my behalf.

Simon Guilbert

Senior Manager Audit, Audit Asset Management, on secondment at KPMG in San Francisco

Simon joined KPMG in the Channel Islands as an assistant in 2007, by
2012 he was a manager. He was heavily involved in the transition to a fully
electronic audit file in 2010-11.

‘Promotion opportunities, the prospect to work on sizable audits and the chance to experience US project management was an opportunity I couldn’t refuse.’

Why did you want to apply for a secondment in San Francisco?

Location and weather-wise, California hardly needs selling! Asides from the sunshine, the large, growing Asset Management and Alternative Investments sub-practice present a number of great opportunities.

What new experiences and exposure have you had so far?

Engaged in the Alternative investments practice I have worked
predominantly on a Debt Fund Client, which involves direct client exposure and a higher volume and complexity of work. The city itself has been an incredible experience and one that has enabled me to thoroughly broaden my horizons and grow as a person.

Are you working with secondees?

There are secondee in my audit room, however I mostly work with US based employees. It’s certainly been a worthwhile experience to engage with the locals.

What are you enjoying from a work and personal aspect?

The work load is a step up from my experience in Guernsey and I have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge. From a personal aspect the city is incredible and whilst a cliché, New York truly never sleeps. It’s great to experience a life where you can practically do whatever you want, whenever you want.

What are the benefits of working for a KPMG member firm?

They have been hugely accommodating in offering both career advice and
assisting me with the move, providing me with the opportunity to move abroad and expand my skill sets.

Charles Downing

Audit Manager, Audit NYFS Asset Management, on secondment at KPMG in New York

Deciding not to pursue University, Guernsey-born Charles Downing joined KPMG in the Channel Islands straight from school. He went on to study ACA passing all of his exams first time. He works predominantly on PE, Funds and captive insurance.

‘I applied to NYC in spring 2014 and received an offer that same summer. It’s a hugely exciting experience and one I’d recommend to anyone.’

Why did you want to apply for a secondment and why New York?

Having not been to University I was looking to expand my horizons and challenge myself.

Working for such a large company, I wanted to make the most of the opportunities offered and explore the world - moving to NYC has always
been a goal of mine.

What new experiences and exposure have you had so far?

Engaged in the Alternative investments practice I have worked predominantly on a Debt Fund Client, which involves direct client exposure and a higher volume and complexity of work. Chris Goddard

Tax Manager, FS, on secondment at KPMG in Zurich

Chris joined KPMG in the Channel Islands as a school
leaver in 2008, quickly progressing to the position of tax manager.

‘It was always my intention to look into secondment opportunities. Having now experienced it first-hand, it’s something I would highly recommend to other employees.’

Why did you want to apply for a secondment in Switzerland?

Joining KPMG in the Channel Islands as a school leaver, I was keen to work overseas to broaden my horizons and experience a new culture. I studied French and German at school and have visited Switzerland several times in the past - each time falling more and more in love with the area.

What new experiences and exposure have you had so far?

Coming from a background in UK tax, I had to quickly learn a new tax system (the Swiss tax regime is not nearly as complicated, but it does have its quirks). I’ve also had several meetings and conference calls with clients in non-native languages (French and German) – this was incredibly daunting at first, but I always had a partner next to me to fall back on when needed.

Are you working with secondees?

I’m working in the Financial Services Tax department, which has
approximately 20 employees. They are all Swiss, German or French natives (although most of them have spent time on secondment overseas).

What are you enjoying from a work and personal aspect?

My work is challenging and varied, which I love. No day is the same and I am constantly facing different issues and questions, which keeps me on my toes.

From a personal aspect, the nearest ski resort is a 22 minute drive from my front door, you can guess what I spend most of my weekends in the winter doing…

What are the benefits of working for a KPMG member firm?

The support KPMG provides throughout the secondment process is superb. I’ve met numerous other expats since arriving in Zurich; all of them envious of
the backing I’ve received. My relocation agent helped me with everything from opening a bank account, to finding a place to live to registering a car.
