Defence organization needs to consider all of the options for ERP and find the one that best aligns with their organization, strategy and objectives.
When it comes to making informed decisions in a rapidly shifting sphere of operations, data is critical. Information about personnel, supply and resource usage must be easily accessible, reliable and up to date.
“The key to the kingdom is the data.” Miles MacNamee, Defense Lead Partner of KPMG US explains. “When we spoke with the Five Eyes community, we learned how important it is for defense organizations to have the information they need at their fingertips.”
That’s why it’s critical for defense organizations to find and implement technology solutions that provide valuable insights into the activities supporting their operations. With the right systems and tools in place, defense organizations can make more effective resource decisions and enhance their ability to achieve desired organizational outcomes.
Making sure they have the right technologies isn’t easy. “Enabling technologies are moving fast: it’s a question of ‘How do we keep up?’” says Victor Vae’au, CIO of the New Zealand Defense Force (NZDF).
“Mobility and the use of cloud technologies are the hot technology topics for CIOs in defense forces,” says MacNamee. “The Canadian Department of National Defense sees the move to cloud as inevitable, and they – like the US Department of Defense – are coming to terms with what a move to cloud means from a security perspective and, in particular, where data will reside.”
The challenge is that an ERP system isn’t a one-size-fits-all matter. Each organization should consider the myriad of options and find the one that best aligns with their organization, strategy and objectives. This could mean a cloud-based solution for all operational processes (e.g. procurement, HR, finance), or a hybrid approach that includes cloud-based and in-house solutions along with mobile access.
Before making an ERP decision, defense organizations should consider the environment in which they operate, their current systems and processes, legislative and regulatory restrictions on their activities and solutions and leading practices for ERP systems.
