All your questions about KPMG graduate and intern recruitment answered in our FAQs.

When should I apply?

Applications for our graduate roles and summer intern positions, open on 14th February 2017. We don’t publish a closing date as we recruit on an ongoing basis from February 14th and as soon as we have filled roles in a particularly location or service line application details for that role will be removed from  our website. Assessment days take place throughout late February and March so you’ll need to be available to attend one of our offices during this period.

How will I know if my application has been received?

After you click ‘send’ on your application, you’ll receive an automated confirmation email. (Make sure you supply us with the email address you use most often). And check your email regularly, so that you don’t miss any correspondence from us.

Which role should I apply for?

Have a look at our vacancies list, and choose the role you’d like to apply for. We list our roles by Office, Division and whether it is a graduate or intern role (e.g Wellington – Audit – Internship).

You are only allowed to apply for one role per application round, so make sure you choose carefully. We do give you the option to state additional preferences either for service line or location so please do this on your one application. If you apply for multiple roles all of your applications will be rejected.

For a brief overview of the different divisions at KPMG, see what we do, or download our grad recruitment brochure. You can also find plenty more information about the divisions on our main KPMG website.

Can I apply if I’m an International Student studying in New Zealand?

Yes, KPMG New Zealand welcomes applications from international students. You’ll just need to meet the following criteria:

  • You must be currently enrolled in a full-time degree at a New Zealand university, or, prior to joining KPMG for a graduate role, you must have completed one academic year of your degree at a New Zealand University.
  • You must be able to attend one of our assessment days (i.e. you will be in New Zealand during February and March).

We suggest you contact the New Zealand Immigration Department for more information about working in New Zealand.

What’s involved in KPMG’s grad recruitment process?

The process is the same for both Graduates and Summer Interns (although we assess the groups slightly differently, to reflect your different levels of experience). The first step is to apply online. You’ll upload your CV and academic transcript, as well as complete our online application form (which includes a couple of specific questions about why you want to work for KPMG and what makes you tick). We do not require a cover letter.

If your application is successful, we’ll invite you to complete a video interview. This involves answering some brief questions about your work, life and study experiences. We’ll also send you a link to complete our online testing.

Finally, based on your results so far, we’ll invite you to take part in an assessment day at your chosen office

How can I prepare for the assessment day?

You don’t need to prepare as such – we’ll explain everything on the day, and give you all the support you need.

There’ll also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions of our Partners, Managers and Grads; so have a think about those too.

Other advice is to get a good night’s sleep the night before, and arrive with an enthusiastic mindset, ready to enjoy the day!

How can I prepare for my video interview?

You don’t need to do anything to prepare – it’s mostly just about being yourself.

Our video interviewing tool will ask you a short series of questions, and film you answering them.

The great thing is you can use the tool to practice as much as you like, before you answer our questions. So you can practice until you feel comfortable using the system, and feel that you’re coming across well on screen. (Your University might also have a video system you could try out in advance – check with your Careers Service).

The questions you’ll be asked won’t be tricky, or designed to catch you out. It’s more about getting to know you. So just remember to smile, be relaxed, and let your personality shine through.

How will I know if I’ve been successful at each stage?

If you’re successful in reaching the next stage, we’ll get in touch to let you know next steps. This will usually be via email, or via phone.

If your application is not successful in reaching the next stage, you’ll receive an email from us. Because we receive such a large number of applications, unfortunately we can’t provide individual feedback if your initial online application is unsuccessful. However, if you are unsuccessful at any later stage in the process, you will be offered a one-on-one feedback call with a member of our Recruitment Team. (In case you’d like to receive feedback on how you could improve for next time). Feedback calls are scheduled in early-mid April.

How far through my degree can I apply for a role at KPMG?

If you’re looking for a summer internship, you can be in any year of university. That said, we generally take people in their second-to-last year of study. For graduate positions, you’ll be in your final year of study.

Note: it is a great idea to apply for a summer intern position, as we often offer our interns a graduate position based on their performance over the summer.

Do I need an accounting degree to apply?

If you are looking to apply for Audit or Enterprise we normally find that you will already meet the pre-requisites to start your CAANZ or CPA studies when you join us but we do take a small number of graduates each year with more diverse backgrounds.

For Tax or Advisory it isn’t imperative although for tax it is likely you’ll study either accounting and/or law. If you are unsure whether you meet the requirements speak to us on campus or at one of our open evenings or contact CPA or CAANZ and they can inform you of the current eligibility requirements.

What grades do I need to be eligible to apply to KPMG?

Generally speaking, we’re looking for a B grade average or above. However, grades are not the be-all-and-end-all at KPMG. We’re looking for students with a well-rounded CV that includes work experience, extracurricular activities, leadership experience and community involvement.

What support will I receive as an intern or grad at KPMG?

Plenty! We have an in-house team dedicated to your learning and development. They will not only support you through your professional qualifications, but also with your personal career planning.

If you’re planning to take advantage of our global opportunities, we have a Global Mobility Consultant who will support you on your exciting overseas adventure.

We’re big on teamwork at KPMG, and we have an open door policy. Our Managers and Partners (including our Chairman, Ross Buckley) are always willing to provide you with professional guidance, and offer the benefit of their experience. They understand what it’s like to be starting out, because they were a grad once too!
