KAS BANK leverages robotics to increase agility

European custodian bank KAS BANK's ambition is to enable prosperity for future generations. With US$570 billion in assets under management KAS BANK is a leading specialist focused on the delivery of custodian services to institutional investors and financial institutions. To reach its ambition KAS BANK is continuously working on further improvement of its services by means of operational excellence and client empowerment.

As part of this strategy KAS BANK and KPMG collaborated to implement and embed Robotic Process Automation as a means to further improve the quality and seamlessness of its end-to-end core processes. The industry insights of KAS BANK specialists combined with KPMG's experience in building RPA Centers of Excellence resulted in the robotization of 30+ operational processes across the Operations, Finance and Commercial departments within the first year.

Our approach

KPMG developed the 6x6 RPA Implementation Framework which helps organization's with the:

1) adoption of RPA in the organizational vision and strategy,

2) effective implementation of RPA across the organization.

This framework consists of 6 levers, each consisting of 6 subjects constituting a structured RPA implementation and operating model. Part of the framework are the RPA vision (e.g. organizational vision, business drivers) and RPA strategy (e.g. sourcing strategy, digital stack, end-to-end optimization approach) which continuously drive evaluation of the levers. The levers act as a framework to help design the proper implementation approach and operating model.

1. Organizational Structure & Governance

A proper design of the organizational structure and roles, and the governance to support it, is critical for an effective adoption.

2. Process Delivery and Deployment

Process delivery and deployment is about setting up demand mechanisms, both bottom-up and top-down, and putting in place clear process analysis, selection, delivery, maintain and value management mechanisms.

3. Technology

Some key practical subjects to consider as part of the implementation are the preparation of the technical infrastructure, setting up application servers, configuring robotic runtime resources and database configuration to support test and production environments. In addition, formation of the digital strategy with fit-for-purpose technology is the key driver for sustained success.

4. Vendor management

Another key success factor when scaling is selection and management of the RPA vendor. The right sourcing strategy enables synergy advantages and agility.

5. Performance & Risk Management

It is important to measure and visualize the benefits that are being realized. Formulation of the right KPIs is key, avoid focusing solely on work reduction, but rather focus on KPIs such as quality, first time right, predictable service levels and client satisfaction. If implemented properly RPA can increase control and add to compliance possibilities.

6. People & Competences

A key part of managing the implementation is having a clear vision on why the change is needed and how this change will affect the workforce and employees; the case for change.

Benefits of RPA for KAS BANK

Our approach resulted in higher quality, predictable processes, faster through put times to clients, reduced compliance risks and the ability of employees to allocate more of their time towards client contact. Some of the key results are increased predictability of end-to-end processes, faster through put times for clients and reduced compliance risks.

“We are using robotics to increase the agility of our organization and deliver high-quality and tangible results to our clients faster”, COO of KAS BANK

So which benefit stands out most? While the robots are performing some of the more transactional and repetitive tasks, the KAS BANK specialists are able to focus on what they love most: perform custody and value-adding investment administration activities that directly benefit their clients.
