Grant Management Director, BRACED
Kamal Shah KPMG’s IDAS and covering the wider East African region as well as supporting IDAS regional hubs in Southern and West Africa.
Away from the fast-paced life at KPMG offices, you would normally find Kamal in the outdoors, cycling, hiking or diving. Whilst he trained as an accountant, his passion has been in conservation and development in Africa. After completing his audit training and doing a few years in mainstream audit, advisory and corporate finance, he joined KPMG IDAS which offered him an ideal space to apply his professional training in the development sector.
His journey with IDAS has been interesting and exciting with a lot of time spent away from the office in remote places; monitoring health centres in rural South Sudan or reviewing Darfur’s water and sanitation programmes or visiting innovative projects in the far west of Nepal which are working on improving farmers’ livelihoods. To complement his practical experience in the field, Kamal went on to complete an MSc in Sustainable Development at SOAS to structure his knowledge and experience within the framework of current development discourses. For his thesis, he undertook research on the challenges of wildlife conservation in Iran.
Kamal has been involved with the management and delivery of large donor funded programmes especially in climate change and is currently involved with one of the largest global climate resilience programmes which works in 13 countries in Asia, Sahel and East Africa. On working at KPMG, he says, “KPMG IDAS has a great team of like-minded professionals who are all about making an impact and it has been an interesting journey so far. I have seen KPMG IDAS grow over the last 10 years from a small department staffed with finance professionals working regionally, to an impressive global centre of excellence with sector focused professionals delivering impact and value on the ground, and I have been glad to have been part of that growth.”
