The direct selling industry is estimated at INR 72 bn in India in 2012-13, and has the potential to reach INR 645 bn by 2025. In India, the industry has contributed significantly in the area of women’s empowerment, skill development, technology percolation and growth of the SMEs sector, besides contributing to the exchequer.
In addition, the industry also provides a viable means of alternative income,
which promotes self-employment. With the success of the industry, a number of fraudulent businesses have also tried to emulate the form. There is a need to revisit existing laws and bring about regulatory clarity to build an environment of trust in order to reap the multiple benefits that the industry has to offer.
