Machine Learning is powerful

By Simren Singh Sørensen Dhaliwal, Senior Consultant, Advisory

Machine learning has arrived and is ready to create dramatic change across all sectors of the Danish economy. In fact, some companies are already using it. The technology, which we define as "a method of data analysis that automates analytical model building… and allows computers to find hidden insights without being explicitly programmed where to look" (source: SAS Institute), allows companies to derive completely new insights and efficiencies from data that they have not seen before. Its application has been particularly impactful in areas such as:

  • Risk analytics
  • Customer segmentation analyses
  • Credit scoring
  • Execution of back-office processes (such as fraud detection and AML).

Why now?

While machine learning has previously been the domain of leading technology companies such as Google and Facebook, a couple of key developments over the past few years have made it readily available to companies across industries. The first is the easy access to cloud computing services (such as Amazon Web Services) that give you the processing capacity to run machine learning at scale, and the second is the growth in open-sourced machine learning libraries (TensorFlow, Apache Spark, OpenAI, etc.) that allow anybody to build upon previous work created by others, including work of the Googles and Facebooks of the world. These two factors make machine learning feasible from both an infrastructure and development point of view.
