As licensing rules have evolved into complex structures, well-implemented and optimised Software Asset Management processes have become a necessity for any IT department.
SAM is an IT practice that helps control and optimise the use of software in an organisation. SAM can assist in controlling costs and manage legal risks and investments. It is easily scaled with the growth of the organisation.
Implementing a SAM process in the organisation can improve the ability to choose the most cost-effective licensing program. A SAM process gives you a better overview of licences purchased and deployed – i.e. what you are using. Therefore, it helps you make effective decisions when purchasing licences. In addition, having an overview of the software in use in your organisation puts you in a stronger position when negotiating the contract with the software vendor.
A well-implemented SAM process will make you better prepared for an audit. The SAM plan can help you to be compliant and thus help you avoid financial penalties, lawsuits and audit fees.
At KPMG, we are experts at assisting our clients by evaluating current SAM processes, designing new processes, modifying existing ones and implementing these changes.
