Launched in 2011, Project WeCan is a ‘business-in-community’ initiative providing disadvantaged students with opportunities and care to empower them to pursue higher studies and future careers. In 2016, 51 schools joined this initiative involving 43,000 students in Hong Kong.

Using an ‘adopt a school’ model, Project WeCan is an open platform where each school is coupled with a partner in a multi-year collaboration for providing financial and volunteer support. Since 2016, the KPMG Foundation has adopted Caritas Tuen Mun Marden Foundation Secondary School (Marden), where about 80 percent of the students are non-Chinese speaking from over 18 countries including Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, India, Vietnam and Yemen. The school offers different internationally recognised courses in order to cater for the learners’ diversity.

Our people also became mentors for Marden students through the Life Buddies programme launched by the Commission on Poverty. The aim is to help underprivileged youth achieve upward mobility in society, and thereby reduce intergenerational poverty.

A wide range of activities has been organised for the students such as:

  • Interview skills workshop during Career Exploration Day
  • Company visit
  • Job tasting and internships
  • Life Buddies mentorship
  • Global Dignity workshops
  • Financial literacy workshop.
