China Children and Teenagers’ Foundation (CCTF) was the first independent, non-profit charity organisation in China. Their mission is to care for, foster and educate children and teenagers in China, especially in minority and impoverished regions. They have various projects focusing on the education and well-being of children and young people.

In December 2008, the KPMG Foundation reached an agreement with CCTF to build a community centre in Cifeng County, Sichuan province. The centre is an exemplary combination of green building, renewable energy and resources, and quake-resistant technology. It is built with environmentally friendly and locally sourced materials, including processed bamboo, rammed earth and straw bale for thermal walls and roofs, as well as recycled timber for doors and window frames. This set new benchmarks for construction techniques in rural China.

The centre was completed in May 2010. It was showcased as an example of best practice for sustainable living and environmental protection at the ZED Pavilion of the Shanghai World Expo, due to its distinct energy-saving and environmental features.

As a way of promoting sustainable development, we began organising volunteer visits to the centre twice a year beginning in 2011, in order to provide children in the area with knowledge of the outside world and to build lasting friendships.
