KPMG International has appointed Jürg Birri of Switzerland as Global Head of Legal, effective 1 October 2016. He will take on his new responsibilities in addition to his current role as Head of the Legal Practice and the Regulatory Competence Center at KPMG Switzerland.
KPMG International is establishing Legal as a new global service line. Jürg Birri (47), a Swiss graduate in law from the University of St. Gallen (lic. iur.), attorney and Partner at KPMG Switzerland, has now been put at the helm of this new line of services. In his capacity as Global Head of Legal, this native of Aargau will promote legal advisory services as an integrated, multidisciplinary service center and center of excellence at the global level. At present, KPMG has legal departments in some 70 member firms, employs over 1,200 legal professionals and plans to grow significantly in this area over the next few years.
When talking about the specifics of his new role, Jürg Birri says, “We want to offer our clients integrated services that are truly end-to-end solutions. In other words, legal advice that fits seamlessly into our portfolio of audit, tax and advisory services – and that on a global scale.” Birri took over leadership of Legal in 2011 and the Regulatory Competence Center of KPMG Switzerland in 2014 which he then systematically enhanced. He will continue to head up both of these spheres of responsibility in the future as well.
“The fact that Jürg Birri, a Swiss Partner of KPMG, has been entrusted with this important new role as Global Head of Legal is clearly indicative of our high level of consulting expertise,” Stefan Pfister, CEO of KPMG Switzerland, says with pride.
Jürg Birri joined KPMG Switzerland as a Partner in 2011. He provides advisory services on legal and regulatory matters to clients hailing predominantly from the financial services sector. Prior to his post at KPMG he worked at a law firm in Zurich where he advised private clients on tax-related issues before heading up the asset and tax planning division of a Swiss private bank.
This father of two studied law at the University of St. Gallen (HSG) and then went on to earn his license to practice law and Swiss certification as a tax expert.
