Nicole Diermeier, what are your five very best summer tips for Switzerland?

Nicole Diermeier: Needless to say, more than five come to mind. Just off the top of my head, I’d say:

  • The Engadin, a high Alpine valley region at 1,800 meters above sea level, is unforgettable with its magnificent lake district, national park and two railway highlights, the Glacier and Bernina Express. The Albula and Bernina lines have been designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites.
  • Lake Lucerne in Central Switzerland has quite a lot to offer: The city of Lucerne itself, which is known for its cultural offerings and festivals, the historic fleet of paddle steamers on Switzerland’s most picturesque lake plus a horizon full of mountain peaks such as Pilatus, Rigi, Stanserhorn, Stoos, Fronalpstock and Titlis, some of which are served by absolutely spectacular means of transportation that whisk visitors to the lofty heights.
  • In the Bernese Oberland, the Interlaken-Jungfrau region boasts two lakes and an incredible array of mountains offering exceptional views: Jungfraujoch, Schilthorn, Männlichen, Schynige Platte, Brienzer Rothorn and many more.
  • In Western Switzerland, the Lavaux region between Lausanne and Montreux on Lake Geneva impresses visitors with its quaint vineyards, villages and castles. This, too, is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
  • Valais, home to Zermatt and the Matterhorn, quite simply Switzerland’s most famous landmark, needs no further explanations: absolutely breathtaking!

As a bonus, I’d also like to mention the “Grand Tour of Switzerland”: This 1,600-kilometer road trip takes you on a journey through Switzerland, replete with a multitude of other highlights and quite a few insiders’ tips. Of course the Grand Tour also passes through Ticino and a long list of cities and towns of all sizes.

Markus Binkert, which tips would you like to share for this year’s summer vacation?

Markus Binkert: Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) flies from Zurich and Geneva to more than 100 destinations in 43 countries around the globe. For anybody currently interested in making travel plans, however, I highly recommend five new destinations that SWISS has added to its flight program for summer 2017.

  • For the first time this summer, SWISS passengers are now able to fly from Zurich to Bergen. Bergen is Norway’s second-largest city and the starting point for Hurtigruten, the route taken by mail ships along the Norwegian coast.
  • Our new direct flight to the southern Irish city of Cork, the gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way, is ideal for nature lovers with a penchant for active vacations.
  • Other new destinations include Germany’s ever-popular island of Sylt in the North Sea and Figari on the island of Corsica. Both of these locations offer gorgeous beaches and a host of water sports and recreational activities.
  • I can recommend our new direct flight to the southern Serbian city of Niš to anybody who feels drawn to the Balkans.

Incidentally, SWISS is deploying its new short- and medium-haul aircraft, the Bombardier C Series, on these new routes. SWISS is the world’s first airline to use this new aircraft, which was built from the ground up and sets new standards in terms of operating efficiency and environmental friendliness. Plus innovations to the cabin design have achieved significant improvements in passenger comfort. Large, closely spaced windows, for instance, allow extra daylight into the cabin which lends the interior of the aircraft an entirely different sense of space. Just lean up against the window and enjoy the view.
