Peter Swanstrom

Partner, Tax Litigation & Dispute Resolution, KPMG Law LLP

KPMG in Canada

Peter is a lawyer specializing in tax litigation and dispute resolution. He leverages his extensive courtroom and government experience to help taxpayers win at trial, on appeal, or produce favourable settlements out of court.

Peter began his career with the Department of Justice, spending almost a decade exclusively litigating tax cases on behalf of the Canada Revenue Agency (“CRA”). He routinely appeared before the Tax Court of Canada, the Federal Court, and the Federal Court of Appeal on cases involving a wide range of income tax, GST/HST, and administrative law/judicial review issues. Peter has acted as counsel on a number of landmark tax cases, including major transfer pricing litigation, income vs. capital litigation, and litigation concerning the CRA’s information gathering and audit powers.

Despite Peter’s courtroom experience, he knows that the best and most cost-efficient outcome is often a negotiated one. Peter uses his deep understanding of the tax dispute resolution process to negotiate settlements that avoid the cost and uncertainty of going to court.
