Meet Christine! A newly qualified accountant with KPMG in Bermuda
I was drawn to the accounting profession because of the opportunities having a globally recognized qualification would offer. KPMG Bermuda was an easy choice given its Big Four status and vibrant student program, and I began attending their K-nect networking events to learn more about what they offered students.
While in my second year at Dalhousie University, I was awarded the 2011 KPMG scholarship which not only offered significant financial support, but also offered co-op placements during university and a full time Staff Accountant position upon graduation.
As it was required by my Bachelor of Commerce program at Dalhousie University, I completed three Co-Op placements within KPMG’s Investment and Banking department. As a co-op student, I immediately felt part of the team of diverse, young professionals. I was given meaningful work with friendly, on-the-job coaching.
My third co-op working experience was during the summer months, which coordinated with KPMG’s summer internship program. As part of the program, interns are put into teams and assigned a local charity to assist with a financial-related project. I was able to help the Centre on Philanthropy with collecting and interpreting data on how local charities were being funded. It was a great experience, and I got insight into Bermuda’s not-for-profit sector.
In July of 2014, I joined KPMG’s Graduate Program full time as a Staff Accountant and started the Canada CPA PEP program soon after. I was provided with paid study leave and education mentors which greatly assisted in getting through the six modules of the CPA Canada program. In addition to exam support, professional development was also a priority. Within my first few months at the firm, I attended the KPMG Audit Fundamentals training course, which gave me the opportunity to network with KPMG graduates from across the United States.
I passed the CPA Canada Common Final Examination (CFE) in December of 2016 and was promoted to Audit Senior in January of this year. KPMG has been a great platform to develop both personally and professionally, and I look forward to furthering my career with KPMG.
