Meet our graduates: Learn from Polina about her experience at KPMG.

If you’re a new graduate, or in the final year of your degree, you’ll be making choices about your career path. Find out straight from Polina Ruseva, Advisor, Tax, about why she chose KPMG and learn about her experience so far.

I chose KPMG because: While at university, I had the opportunity to take a course on Taxation. What really caught my attention was the complexity of corporate taxation and the many aspects of international tax law. That was the moment when I decided to research more about the role of tax consultants.

Upon my graduation, I applied to KPMG in Bulgaria and, after a grilling selection process, I was one of the lucky few to join the Tax department. Since then, I’ve been happy to work in a place where I can constantly learn new things and develop my skills.

I enjoy working in Tax because: The cool thing about my job is that every day I work on a different project, each with its client specific problems. When I am getting ready for work in the morning, I know that a new challenge is waiting for me, something that I might have never done before, something that will make me think outside of the box and broaden my knowledge.

The world of Tax is changing every day and the job of the tax consultants is becoming more global and more demanding. Working in Tax, I have to study not only how the Bulgarian tax system works, but also what may be the difficulties and the opportunities for clients with international presence. This inevitably gives me the chance to see the global picture.

My role involves: I am currently part of the Mergers & Acquisitions team and my role mainly involves working on transfer pricing and tax due diligence projects. I like this duality of my role because it presents me with different sides of the Tax story.

The social side of KPMG is: Working with KPMG gives you the opportunity to work with different people, each bringing their story which resonates in a unique way with you. What I really like is that when we are at a company event or even when we are just having lunch nobody talks about work and just enjoys themselves. It is pretty much a gathering with friends.

One of my memorable work moments: For the time spent at KPMG, I’ve had many memorable moments: my first involvement in a challenging project, my first client meeting. But something that I am really grateful for is that I can see the result of my work and the appreciation from clients.

My top tip for students applying to KPMG: Choosing your first job is probably one of the most important decisions you will make after graduating from the university. The work at KPMG gives you the opportunity to constantly learn new things and meet many interesting people. You should not give up if something looks hard, quite the opposite – you have to be motivated and persistent and you will be able to become a professional in your chosen area.
