As part of the tax shift, the Belgian federal government has recently decided to increase the excise duty rates on alcohol and alcoholic beverages as of 1 November 2015.
The Belgian Customs & Excise Authorities have posted these new excise duty rates on their website although the Royal Decree has not been published yet.
The document gives an overview of the current and new excise duty rates on alcohol and alcoholic beverages. A quick comparison shows that the excise duty rates will increase substantially (from 8,5% for beer up to more than 40% for ethyl alcohol). Therefore, we strongly recommend you to release these goods for consumption with payment of the current excise duties before the 1st of November 2015.
Note that the Belgian excise duty rates on non-alcoholic beverages (and other excise goods) will increase as of 1 January 2016. We will inform through a separate communication.
