For today’s facility managers, physical asset managers and real estate managers, standards provide general guidance for organizing and optimising their activities. Standards help them demonstrate their organization’s compliance and operational efficiency, and guide them in handling evolving technology and competing priorities.
As a fairly new professional and operational discipline in business, facility management is growing rapidly around the world. Despite its novelty, the concept of facility management has evolved considerably in recent years, and has already shifted from a building-oriented to a service-oriented occupation. As a result, there is still little clarity around the activities, roles and responsibilities that define this discipline. To resolve this, the new standard 'ISO 41001, Facility management - Management systems - Requirements with guidance for use’, published by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO), outlines the main requirements and components of facility management. ISO 41001 adopts Annex SL and thus shares the ISO High-Level Structure (HLS) for a smooth implementation in an organization’s management system.
