How smart is our infrastructure?

How smart is our infrastructure?

Australia's infrastructure is booming, but is it smart? As the country's population grows it faces some critical challenges to maintain its economic growth, social cohesion and standard of living.

Given Australia’s forecasted population growth, simply spending more and building more traditional infrastructure is not sustainable for our cities and regions. We must shift our thinking on how we plan, fund and manage our infrastructure. Key focus areas must be the how we manage demand for existing infrastructure, how we prepare for the next generation of transport such as autonomous vehicles and plan more holistically for our growing cities.

This topic was debated on Sky News Business – The Next 5 Years with Bernard Salt, Michel Masson, CEO, Infrastructure Victoria and Richard Threlfall, Global Head of Infrastructure, KPMG. The episode explored:

  • the infrastructure priorities for Australia over the next 5 years
  • a global perspective on how other countries are adopting technology to transform their infrastructure
  • how ready Australia is for the next generation of transport and the societal and economic impacts of new forms of transport
  • technology as an enabler of better city outcomes
  • smart cities of the future: which Australian cities are moving ahead of the pack and which global cities lead the world on the issue of smart infrastructure. Where can the smart infrastructure movement take Australia?

Alice Thompson, National Lead Cities and Regions, KPMG and Catherine Caruana-McManus, Director, Meshed and Smart Cities expert, joined Bernard on a panel to discuss how Australia’s infrastructure projects will impact the way we live over the next 5 years.
