Success in a world of constant disruption takes leadership with strategic vision. In KPMG’s 2015 Global CEO Outlook Study we asked over 1,200 Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), including 52 from Australia, about how their company and the business world is evolving and what they will be doing over the next 3 years to turn challenges into opportunities.

Australia’s CEOs are indicating a striking rise in confidence in domestic and global economic prospects. The study found the top strategic priorities for Australian CEOs are a stronger client focus, increasing cash flow, developing new growth strategies and reducing cost structures. Many recognise they need to transform their businesses if they are to survive and prosper. To do so, however, businesses need to be willing to take bigger risks.

Key Australian findings

  • Australian CEOs are optimistic about the economy with 73 percent more confident than last year, but less optimistic on company performance with 52 percent more confident than last year.
  • The competitive environment will be tougher, with more pressure from new entrants, and customer centricity will be key.
  • Aggressive growth strategies will prevail, with organic growth set to rise and acquisitions on the horizon.
  • Growth needs to be carefully calibrated with risk taking.
Eighty-five percent of CEOs expect to increase headcount over the next 3 years.
  • Whilst Australian leaders are mindful of the need to innovate to thrive, only 23 percent have a fully developed and implemented process for company-wide innovation.
