COP21 Climate Talks – an overview

From 30 November until 11 December over 190 countries came together in Paris for the 21st Conference of Parties (COP21), the UN Climate Change Talks for 2015. COP21 was the largest diplomatic event ever hosted by France. It attracted close to 50,000 participants, including 5,000 government negotiators and a further 20,000 official government and public sector delegates.

The key objective was to reach an agreement that will limit increases in global average temperature to 2°C or less above pre-industrial levels.

Before COP21, all countries needed to publish details of how they intend to contribute to the 2°C goal. Another objective of the meeting was to mobilise a flow of US$100 billion per year from developed to developing countries to help them reduce emissions and adapt to the effects of climate change.

France played a leading role in facilitating the COP21 negotiations and ensuring they were transparent and inclusive.
