Western Australian Chairman
Building genuine relationships is something Gary Smith believes in. Calling a client or colleague simply to ask how their day’s going is one way of establishing collaborative pathways for successful outcomes on projects big and small. It’s part of looking at the whole environment, operating under ethical values as well as being authentic and able to take a risk. All attributes that underpin Gary’s way of working.
Whether it’s his work on Building a Better WA, consulting for Rio Tinto or mentoring within KPMG, Gary’s focus is always on ensuring the big picture is addressed and not just the single challenge that may have presented itself at the beginning. “I collaborate intensely, whether it’s a one-to-one or a larger group it’s still the same level of commitment and focus,” Gary explains.
Gary’s focus on innovation has led him to start KPMG Australia’s Energise accelerator program for tech start-ups in the Energy and Natural Resources sector. Working side-by-side with established companies, key issues facing the sector are identified and then start ups have the opportunity to present and commercialise their solutions. So far 14 KPMG clients have supported the program. “It’s a way to fast-track innovative companies in WA and help the ENR environment adapt and diversify sooner rather than later. It also allows the larger companies to test their agility and ability to take on board innovation.”
Maintaining the vitality of Perth and creating an environment that nurtures our talented people, is another passion of Gary’s. He was a founding Director of Committee for Perth and is still a member. Gary also sits on the board of Edge Employment Solutions, a charity that helps people with a disability find work and a purpose in society. Recently, he has found yet another way to build pathways with young people – the 700kms Ride For Youth from Albany to Perth in April 2016, stopping off to engage with students at high schools along the route. “It’s going to be physically tough but a great way to talk to different groups of kids in WA.”
