Michael Hiller

Queensland Chairman

KPMG Australia

One of the best pieces of advice Michael received was from his father. “He came up with this crazy idea that I could do a psychology degree as well as a commerce degree.”

Michael’s grounding in psychology plays a key role in all of his work. Among other things, it leads him to query why something is happening, rather than simply to accept it the way it is. “It gives you the skills to look at things in a different way, I tend to find you look for the broader meaning.”

After working across government for more than 20 years, Michael views long-term relationships as essential to his job. “Building relationships is critical if you are to get the permission to do things, if you are to get people to understand you and trust you.”

Until March 2018, Michael was KPMG’s National Industry Leader for Infrastructure, Government and Healthcare. In this role, he assisted organisations to improve their performance by focusing on their people, processes, technology, and corporate structures.

Michael, a father of three boys, watches sport to relax – whether that’s football or motor racing. “I go to as much live sport as I can.”
