Careers for graduates: learn about Actuarial Advisory, from pricing to modelling.

In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?

Our business group specialises in Actuarial Advisory work. This covers a range of areas including product pricing, modelling, unit pricing reviews and industry surveys. Along with these, we provide audit assistance for both Internal and External Audit. Predictive data analytics is a big part of what we do also.

We apply our expertise across a range of areas including Mergers and Acquisitions, Superannuation Fund Advisory and Insurance Risk – this includes things like risk management frameworks and conduct risk reviews.

The Actuarial Advisory team is easy-going, intelligent and fun. They’re also highly supportive. Our strong team relationships mean that we work together to get jobs completed rather than having people stay late.

What does the average day look like?

A normal day usually starts with a coffee run in the morning with a couple of colleagues. Following this, we’ll have a few meetings with managers and the team to discuss ongoing work. You will then get stuck into actual tasks and do some thinking about client matters. Lunch is usually a good time to catch up with people from the office for a bite. In the afternoon, you’ll continue with what you have prioritised for the week. Sometimes you could catch up with your PDM before finishing for the day.

What will I learn in the first year?

In the first year, you’ll really develop the core consultancy skills. These being presentation skills, communication skills and the technical skills required to utilise tools such as Excel/VBA, SAS, SQL, and Tableau. But as important as all this, you’ll learn the importance of teamwork and what it takes to deliver under deadlines. You’ll have the opportunity to work in a variety of areas, both traditional and non-traditional and this will give you a good understanding of the KPMG business as a whole.

What’s the best part of the role?

The best part of the role is the sheer variety of work you’re involved with on a week-to-week basis. You’re exposed to many different facets of business across a wide range of clients. And you’re learning side by side with leading industry experts. The whole time you’re developing your network and your core skills as a consultant.
