In a nutshell, what does your business group/service line do?

The Economics team within KPMG provides a full range of economic advisory services – including macroeconomic modelling, CGE analysis, regulatory advice, industry analysis and project feasibility assignments as well as commissioned research and analysis.

Our team is multidisciplinary and multicultural. All team members share an interest (and high level qualifications) in Economics. We enjoy and encourage sharing new approaches and solutions to economic issues. Colleagues have a variety of experience from the public sector, private sector and academia, both domestically and internationally. This offers great exposure to experienced economists who have worked on major projects and have advanced analytical and modelling skills.

What does the average day look like?

The average day varies depending on what projects are happening and at what stage they are at. There is always a regular flow of data work, like looking up the latest employment or national account data from the ABS. Or analysing the direct impact of a policy or shock event to provide inputs into a CGE model. You could also be reviewing recent survey data to see what insights can be found.

Projects often require meeting with a range of organisations, such as Government departments, to understand policy proposals or identify the solution to economic problems. We meet with businesses to better understand their role in the economy and how policies or economic trends may be impacting their business.

Our team regularly goes out for morning coffees to share experiences and ideas on current projects and to discuss broader economic events that are happening.

What will I learn in the first year?

More formally, KPMG Economics also offers access to training in areas such as CGE modelling, macro-modelling, core consulting skills and project management, which allows you grow your skills in specific fields.

What’s the best part of the role?

A role within the KPMG Economics team is both interesting and challenging. It provides you with the opportunity to work in a professional environment that offers a broad variety of assignments. Being able to work on projects that involve major economic issues and current policy debates makes the work very interesting. It’s rewarding to work on projects that have a real impact on the economy.
